Household hazardous waste disposal opportunity for Clare householders
Householders across Clare are being encouraged to avail of an upcoming opportunity to dispose of their hazardous domestic waste free of charge.
The Environment Section of Clare County Council has teamed up with Enva to operate the drop-off day at the Central Waste Management Facility in Inagh from 8:30am to 1:00pm on Saturday, 10th October, 2020.
Waste items including household aerosols, oil filters, old medicines, household detergents, pesticides/herbicides, fluorescent tubes, paint strippers and cleaners, paints and varnishes, cooking and engine oils can be deposited during the drop-off day.
Maria Carey, Executive Engineer, Clare County Council, said: “By hosting this free-of-charge drop-off day, we are providing householders throughout Clare with an opportunity to dispose of their hazardous wastes in a manner that protects human health and the environment.”
Access to the site is only free to householders for the listed items. If the site is being used for other materials on the day, regular gate fees will apply. Householders should ensure that each hazardous waste type brought must be clearly identifiable, segregated and packaged to avoid leaks and minimise risks.
Ms Carey added: “The service is being provided free of charge to householders only. Hazardous waste from commercial operators will not be accepted on the day. These operators should contact approved hazardous waste collectors, like Enva, to dispose of their hazardous waste.”
The one-day event, which is supported by the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment through the Anti-Dumping Initiative, will be staffed by Clare County Council and Enva.
Clare County Council is also encouraging people to reduce the amount of chemical-based products that they use in their home in the first instance.
Karen Foley, Environmental Awareness Officer, Clare County Council, said: “Using eco-friendly alternatives has benefits for our health as well as the environment. It is also a lot more affordable option.
“People can learn more about how to be greener by downloading Greener Cleaning, Greener Gardening and DIY guides at www.mywaste.ie. Alternatively, people can email us at greenerclare@clarecoco.ie and we can provide a hard copy of these guides, as well as the much sought-after Greener Cleaning labels.”
